Laying Carpet Stones and Natural Sandstone Mosaic on a
Patio
1. Allow at least 150mm below the damp proof course and dig
down another 75mm plus the thickness of the paving for the
foundations. This applies to the whole area to be paved.
Ensure that water cannot collect beside buildings by allowing
a slight fall away to a convenient place.
2. Cover the entire area with a semi-dry foundation mix of 6
parts sharp sand to 1 part cement to a depth of 75mm. Compact
and level the area, making sure you only cover the area you can
complete within the day. It is recommended that a maximum area of
3m x 3m is levelled at any one time.
3. Lay the Carpet Stones or Mosaic as required, ensuring the
stones are well bedded into the foundation mix using a rubber
mallet. Alternatively, use a 75mm x 50mm piece of timber and a
rubber mallet to flatten the surface of the Carpet Stones. Ensure
that the paving is level using a spirit level and the joints are
evenly spaced.
For a more realistic look, interlock the Cobble and Brick
Carpet Stones by cutting the half blocks.
The Random Carpet Stones are also designed to be interlocked
by simply cutting out the centre stone and turning the cut pieces
90 degrees to join the mats together.
4. After 24 hours, brush a mix of 4 parts sharp sand to 1
part cement into the joints. The mix should be dry enough not to
leave stains on the surface of the Carpet Stones or Mosaic.
Alternatively, point the joints using a semi-dry mortar mix of 3
parts building sand to 1 part cement. The mix should not be too wet
or too dry.
For a more rustic effect, simply lay on a 50mm bed of sharp
sand, and brush in more sand or sieved soil to fill the
joints.
Laying Carpet Stones on a Driveway
1. Excavate area and lay a concrete base of 100-150mm,
depending upon firmness of the ground.
2. Lay Carpet Stones on a 35mm bed of 5 parts sharp sand
to 1 part cement and compact with a vibrating mechanical plate
(fitted with a rubber sole to avoid marking).
3. Brush a semi-dry mix of 3 parts sharp sand to 1 part cement
into the joints. Brush any excess off the product and leave to
harden.
