Natural Granite Setts and Natural Sandstone Setts
1. Excavate the area to the desired level, making sure that
your finished level is 150mm below the damp proof course of any
adjoining buildings. Build in a fall of 1 to 40 across the width of
the drive and 1 to 80 along the length.
2. Lay a 100mm deep foundation around the edge using a mix of
1 part cement to 6 parts ballast.
3. Mortar the kerb units or edge restraints to the foundation
using a trowel and rubber mallet. Once the kerbs are in position,
haunch the back of the units so that the concrete reaches half way
up the rear of the kerb.
4. Lay a sub-base of crushed stone (type 1) to a compacted
depth of 100mm.
5. Lay setts on a 40mm compacted thickness of semi-dry
cement/sand mix 1 to 3 cement/sand. Lay setts with 15 to 20mm*
joint widths as per the laying pattern required. Bed down with
paviors maul to partially compact the bed and then fully compact
with a plate vibrator.
6. Fill joints with a semi-dry mix of 1 to 3 cement/sand and
ram well in, pointing the joints as the work proceeds.
To prevent mortar staining, keep setts dry during joint
filling.
*Nominal joint widths.
