Planting Suggestions

Plants are repeated with one or two specimens strongly featured in a limited colour pallette. Another option is to have each bed planted with different plants, but in a single colour. They tend to be structural, standard or clipped varieties, but the visual appearance of a formal garden can be considerably softened by low growing plants such as spilling onto the paving.

Ornamental clipped hedges

  • box (also topiary planted in containers)
  • lavender
  • yew
  • cypress

Flowering plants

  • standard roses
  • lilies
  • hebes
  • tulips

Structural plants

  • acanthus
  • alliums
