How to revamp your drive

By Paul Hervey-Brookes

There is a campaign that is ongoing to get people to Green Grey Britain and if you have a solid driveway you can do your bit! To retain the practicality of the drive, make it more appealing for wildlife and help reduce pollution there are several options available.

If it is at all possible remove a strip, either side of the driveway, at least 9 inches wide and infill with decorative stone. Dapple Flint or Harvest Gold are both very attractive. This will allow extra drainage when it rains.

There is usually always an area of driveway that we do not use for cars. Dig this up and put down an attractive gravel and then place containers filled with insect friendly plants on it. Nordic Spar will show off bright colourful plants.

Alternatively you can take up the whole drive if it is solid paving and replace it with open paving and planting. Low growing plants and permeable pavers to help the environment. As you only need a solid surface as wide as your tyres, the planting will make your garden more attractive. Charcoal Driveway Infilta allows for rain drainage and looks stunning against vibrant green and white planting.

Creating a drive from decorative stone Tweed Pebbles or Celtic Plum, provides a solution to rain run off and unused areas of the drive can be planted with drought tolerant plants or you can use large wicker baskets planted up in groups to give a softer feel to the front of your house, attract pollinating insects and add instant kerb appeal.

These ideas, when put in place, will all help the environment and make the front of your house look more attractive.
