Longing for signs of Spring in February
By Paul Hervey-Brookes
February is a great time to clean out the greenhouse ready for Spring sowing.
If you are planning a mini-garden make over this month such as taking up part of the lawn, stack the turf upside down somewhere out of the way and in a couple of years you will have some brilliant compost.
Spring clean cold frames, the greenhouse and cloches ready for Spring planting if you plan to sow outdoors later or if you’re in a colder climate. Don't forget however you can sow seedlings indoor on windowsills and by the time March arrives they will be germinating and ready for the harding off and going out to the greenhouse.
If you have left your old growth on borders now is the time to get pruning and cutting back in the herbaceous borders to allow light and air for new growth. Check and repair any plant supports in readiness for the coming growing seasons. Perennials can be divided and replanted into freshly prepared soil.
Lastly whilst you are outside ensure that you keep feeders and water bowls clean and topped up for small birds who will like you be longing for signs of spring but still need a little gentle support.
