Love your garden episode six

CREATING A GARDEN WITH INFLUENCES FROM THE MEDITERRANEAN

In Love Your Garden this episode in Humberside, we created a holiday at home garden with influences from the Mediterranean.

I love this idea – we can’t always get away to somewhere sunny, but with a great garden we can experience that holiday feeling at home. We all want to get outside in the sunshine, so why not have a garden that evokes the memories of holidays? Then, when the sun is out, it feels like you’re abroad.

TILE PAVING TERRACOTTA TILES

On this episode, we laid a patio using Bradstone Tile paving terracotta tiles. I remember using these tiles when I was working on the ITV show Better Homes about ten years ago. And they are so easy to lay.

They are a good size and easy to handle. And the slabs come in different sizes, meaning you can create intricate patterns with the design to make your patio really personal.

And the beautiful burnt orange colour is so reminiscent of Mediterranean landscapes. It has a real warmth and makes it a pleasure to sit outside in the sunshine.

MEDITERRANEAN THEME PLANTS AND ACCESSORIES

You can also match your Tile paving with terracotta pots, which looks really stunning. Plant them with bold, colourful varieties like geraniums, fuchsias, petunias for a rich display.

And match this with window boxes filled with bright bedding plants and exotic Mediterranean species like bougainvillea grown in large pots.

Another good design trick is to leave a few slabs out when you lay the patio, giving you planting pockets in the ground. Herbs like oregano and thyme make perfect ground cover and help to green up your hard landscaping. And they release their scents as you brush past them when you use the patio.

For a truly Mediterranean theme, why not plant hardy palm trees? These have striking architectural leaves but survive in the British climate. Try Cordyline australis, the Riviera palm, or Trachycarpus fortunei. Both of these varieties are large, impactful plants that would really give the feeling of being on holiday.

CREATING A HOLIDAY PATIO AT HOME

Imaging lying back in the sunshine and looking up through the palm leaves at the clear blue sky overhead. Who needs to travel abroad?

I have also mentioned in these blogs before that we often use printed outdoor canvas in these gardens. They are ideal for screening a plain feature like a fence and creating a beautiful view.

You can design your own with photos like a beach scene or your own holiday snaps. The pictures are then blown up and printed onto waterproof outdoor canvas. The ink even contains special UV protection to stop the colours from bleaching.

Hang these stunning canvas pictures up in the garden to really get you in the holiday spirit. For the finishing touches, bring everything together by planting fragrant climbers to grow up tall structures like walls, fences and pergolas. Jasmine, honeysuckle and cytisus battandieri all have a beautiful Mediterranean fragrance.

And get some music on! You can buy great outdoor speakers and play your favourite songs. Try steel drums for a Caribbean vibe or flamenco guitars to remind you of Spain. Or just play recordings of waves crashing onto the shore to make you feel like you’re by the coast.

That’s all you need to create a holiday patio at home!
