Gardening in October

By Paul Hervey-Brookes

The clocks go back this month and the nights are drawing in, don't despair there are still plenty of reasons to keep you outside in the garden!

If you're thinking of a little project then a raised bed for growing winter vegetables close to the house could be just the answer and by starting now you could be picking fresh lambs lettuce for Christmas!

Filled with herbs, salad leaves, onions and shallots these attractive beds will give colour to the garden over winter as well as giving fresh vegetables.

To achieve this, instead of using wood, try using garden edging. Panache or Natural Sandstone will look particularly good.

For a different look from the normal raised bed this project will look good and provide different growing areas. Build the raised bed in a tier with a large square bed at the bottom, a smaller one placed with corners resting on the sides of the first bed and then a top one again placed at an angle.

Alternatively you can build a square bed and place another one inside it offset from the centre. Filled with herbs, salad leaves, onions and shallots these attractive beds will give colour to the garden over winter as well as giving fresh vegetables.

Of course this month celebrates Halloween so in honour of all hallo’s take 3-4 pumpkins and place them by your front door in a wheelbarrow filled with ornamental cabbages and wood chippings to ward off bad spirits! Alternatively hang pumpkin lights among your trees or wire small pumpkins and gourds for a natural look. Why not see in autumn with an apple bobbing contest, bonfire and BBQ!
