Revamp your garden for Autumn

By Paul Hervey-Brookes

With so much use, your garden terrace can become grubby from spillages, lazy summer BBQ’s and of course muddy feet! Time for a revamp and rethink.

The first thing to do is give it a clean. Sweep thoroughly to remove all debris and get rid of any weeds with a hoe. Treat the area with a solution of a cleaning fluid such as Jeyes fluid, Zoflora etc. being careful to avoid any plants. If your terrace is made of good quality stone paver or something like Old Town paving you can easily and effortlessly give it a good pressure wash.

If you are feeling adventurous and would like to soften the terrace giving a more naturalised feel then you could remove some of the pavers and put in low growing plants.

Once clean stand back and have a think about the past summers use and things which may need modifying. If you have not done so already a good way to define your terrace is with edging. Sawtooth edging adds an old time feel to any terrace. To give definition between terrace and garden you could use Rustic rope or Ancestry edging that comes in a choice of three subtle colours. Of course if the terrace is a little tight on space add a contrasting band of paving to add definition and additional space.

If you are feeling adventurous and would like to soften the terrace giving a more naturalised feel then you could remove some of the pavers and put in low growing plants such as creeping thyme, roman chamomile or a low growing sedum, completing the finish with decorative stone such as Canterbury spa or Golden gravel.

Either adding definition or creating more space are easy ways to give a fresh look whilst softening with planting will create the sense of a new terrace - the great thing is these options will cost far less than a new terrace and can be completed over the course of a great DIY weekend!
