Halloween ideas for your garden
By Paul Hervey-Brookes
October is the month to plan, prepare and decorate your garden for Halloween. To entice, (or perhaps deter) trick or treaters up to your front door, start your decorating here!
Make hanging bats to swoop and fly in the roof of your porch. A witch's hat and broom leant casually against the door post. Add containers filled with gourds and pumpkins and instead of a carved face, stack pumpkins on top of each other and put your door number on them. A novel way to use them. Adorn door posts, walls, low growing plants and hedges with spooky spiders webs and add orange pumpkin lights.
In your garden create a magical, friendly Halloween garden. Line pathways with hand carved pumpkins, pumpkin wreaths on sheds and trees. Decorate cardboard cutouts of fairies with glitter and build fairy houses from sticks and pinecones in small secret spaces. Twinkling white lights will give the effect of fairy wands.
Deep grey Mode paving would make the ideal path to show off these hot orange colours for Halloween and the lush green of next years Spring.
Draw a pumpkin on a large piece of cardboard with a face size hole in. Decorate the base with gourds and sweets and Halloween treats. Use this to give guests a memento of their night. In another corner of your garden, pile up leaves and add gravestones made from cardboard painted grey adorned with cryptic words. Ted N Berried or Candy Steeler!
Add the odd spider and bony hand with signs advertising the spot (Beware, skeleton crossing). Ghosts flying through the trees on broomsticks will complete this picture. Decorate your windows with silhouettes of ghosts, witches, broomsticks, bats, cats and skeletons cut from black cardboard. Add orange lights and pumpkins carved and lit up from within.
Use planting to emphasise the spooky feel. Black pansies, grasses, Sambucus and even aeoniums in pots with gourds and pumpkins round their bases. Black phormiums in planters with bright orange pansies or chrysanthemums. Dramatic and interesting. Take your pick from any of these or use them all and have a spine tingling, spooky Halloween.
