Door wreaths with a difference
By Paul Hervey-Brookes
Once we have decided on the paving which guides our guests to our front doors we should be sure to continue the style credentials. If you have crisp contemporary granite or porcelain paving or prefer the time-worn beauty of paving like Old Town don't forget that quality underfoot should always be coupled with a quality welcome.
Door welcomes are often relegated to the seasonal times of year but when light levels are falling they offer a cherry warm welcome to visitors.
Traditionally circular with fresh leaves and flowers, door wreaths are a “welcome to my home” addition. However, there are many different ways to adorn your door!
Take an old tray and apply a layer of blackboard paint to the inside. Add a minimal number of autumn leaves and berries, then write your message. Be unique.
Decorate a tin can with strips of ribbon. Add a string loop and fill with pretty blooms. All set to go with a difference!
Using a 12” florist ring, a hook for hanging and wired ribbon you can make a very pretty yet simple wreath.
Tie ribbon bows onto the ring using different coloured festive ribbon until full. You will make approximately 36 bows. Attach the hook and hang on your door or wall.
Wrap a wreath base in an old, chunky scarf and embellish with a big ribbon bow.
Bind rope around a base and add paper love hearts, paper flowers or nuts and berries.
Perhaps the simplest and most elegant idea is to go for a walk and pick up fallen autumn leaves and pine cones. Cut out a cardboard square and then glue the leaves and pine cones to it. Add a wide ribbon for hanging. This is ideal for children to do during the holidays.
