80s and 90s

80S AND 90S GARDEN DESIGN

Decadence and excess. The 80s transformed gardens again as more people owned their own homes and gardened. This is the era of the garden centre, home DIY and cottage garden revival.

80s and 90s garden design

create the look

Rich, naturalistic, cottage style planting filled with roses and lavender are key elements of the 80s garden. Pergolas, fences and even beehive composters painted cornflower blue are an 80s retro must have. Smooth and textured natural stone paving harking back with nostalgia tie in beautifully with the cottage revival 80s feel.

In the contemporary 80s garden, bamboos, especially black stemmed varieties, are a must have. Block paved drives were very popular in the 80s, update this look with new block paving which has a contemporary feel and drains more easily.

The 80s saw a revival in growing herbs for cookery. Herb wheels and small knot gardens were very popular and this look can be easily achieved by using decorative aggregates and edging.
