Gardens of the future

Gardens of the future

Looking forward, where will gardens be in 20 or 30 years time?

Will we be sitting back watching machines do all the work (well it has been promised since the 1970’s!) or will we be sitting, not outside, but in digital rooms which look like the real outdoors but without the weather and maintenance issues?

PAUL HERVEY-BROOKES Future garden style and trends explained by award winning designer Paul Hervey-Brookes.

Garden trends have always been difficult to predict, notoriously so, but one thing is clear, our love of gardens is a growing business and as more houses are built so more people will be inspired to grow flowers and have more innovative patio areas.

Perhaps the biggest change will be to the age groups doing the gardening. For the past five or so years we have noticed increasing numbers of the under 30 to 35 age range getting hooked, from growing chillies to simple wholesome vegetables and naturalistic cut flowers. With our busy lives one thing is a certain, we will become increasingly time precious so machines are increasingly likely to offer a way to save time, common place sights might include robotic lawn mowers and laser precision hedge cutters!

Perhaps increasingly the garden will play host to artificial grass which has come on in leaps and bounds recently to be convincing to the touch as well as to the eye. Whatever the future holds from, vertical gardens to floating tree oases, one thing is certain, something will take us all by surprise and become an essential no-one had thought of before!
